Mayor, City Officials Working with Brighton Businesses Impacted by Sunday's Four-Alarm Fire

Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Department of Neighborhood Development Director Evelyn Freidman, and Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services Director Jay Walsh today said City officials are working closely with the Brighton neighborhood businesses ravaged by a four-alarm fire that began early Sunday morning in an effort to help the businesses and employees impacted by the fire.

How to Deadlift properly

There’s a high probability you’ve heard how great the deadlift is for building muscle more times than you care to remember.

But, in spite of all the benefits, very few people are actually doing the deadlift. And of the ones that are, there aren’t many performing it properly.

Keeping that in mind, allow me to share the three most commonly encountered deadlift form faults that I see in the fitness center and how you can correct them.

Blunder 1: Rounding the lower back.

As you can see in this article about how to deadlift (source), rounding the spinal area actually leaves your back in an extremely weak position. It can lead to an injury, although not always right away.

It’s possible you’ll have a friend whose back “just went” when they during a straightforward everyday activity – lifting a pencil from the floor or lifting a bag from the car.

Quite a few injuries to your lower back are the result of damage that’s gathered with time. And the outwardly innocuous event that appeared to cause the injury was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.

You will see some debate about the benefits and drawbacks of rounding your back while deadlifting.

If, for example, you’re working out for a thing that entails lifting with a rounded back (like lifting the Atlas stones in a strongman contest) then some of your workout time ought to be spent with a rounded back in order get you ready for the contest. However it’s not a technique I recommend for most of us.

Stand alongside a mirror sideways on without your top on. You’ll see that your back contains a series of curves. It’s crucial that you maintain this natural curvature when you deadlift.

In other words, your lower back should be arched. It might not be a perfect arch, but it definitely shouldn’t be rounded either.

The best way to do this is to keep the chest high, draw the shoulders back and look forward as opposed to up or down.

Mistake 2: Lifting the barbell by bringing up the hips before the chest area.

When your knees begin to straighten up before the bar rises higher than them, the movement becomes a stiff-legged deadlift rather than a standard deadlift.

Make sure the bar remains close to the shins, concentrate on holding the weight back on your heels (and not your toes) and think of pulling the weight towards you on the way up.

Don’t permit the bar to come out in front of you. It needs to stay near to the body, touching your thighs as you reach the top of the movement.

Kicking off your shoes and deadlifting in your socks or some weightlifting shoes will also be advantageous.

Just why should this help?

The fact that there’s zero cushioning inside the sole means that your feet are a little nearer the ground. This lessens the distance the barbell needs to be pulled, together with making it less difficult to maintain the appropriate back position.

Since the heel isn’t compressible, you’ll find it gives you a stable position from which to drive up. This is a far better than squatting in trainers with soft heels.

Mistake 3: Bouncing the bar off the floor between reps.

The barbell should come to a dead stop between each repetition.

Using a bit of a bounce can work if you’re sufficiently strong to keep your position. But most folks I watch making use of the “touch and go” style find themselves rounding their back.

Let the bar come to a complete pause in between every single repetition. When it’s on the floor, take a moment to correct your body position and run through a short mental check-list – chest muscles up, upper back tight and eyes looking forward – before lifting the barbell again.
